Dreams and Disillusionment

Describe one dream you had as a child which was disillusioned as you grew older and gained a more mature perspective and information about the topic.  How did you feel after this realization?
Blog example:  When I was a child, I used to dream about becoming a famous actor.  I fell asleep imagining what I would say when I was invited to guest star on Beverly Hills 90210.  I wrote my acceptance speech for the inevitable time when my name would be called at the Academy Awards.  I signed up for acting classes at a local college and auditioned for community theater.  However, it was toward the end of my eighth grade year of school that my dream was disillusioned.  The local community theater had closed due to bankruptcy, and in researching colleges, I learned that very few offered theatre programs. I knew I had to give up on being a famous actor.   I was disappointed, but I knew I would have more dreams to come.
Note:  Remember this topic because you will need it for your worksheet following today’s reading.

  2. When I was a child I dreamed of becoming an intellectual who would sit in a study or library and explore the world around me through knowledge and books; wihtout really having to work. Then as I grew older I realized I can't do such a thing because modern day soceity says I need a job to pay for my food and shelter, and I can't dedicate myself to self-teaching because life gives me priorities that I can't avoid.

  3. When I was younger, I truly believed that I was going to become the next Mia Hamm soccer star. I played soccer all the time whenever I had free time. I would imagine myself scoring all the goals and being famous. I then thought that I would move to Los Angeles and have a big house with an indoor and outdoor inground pool. I then realized as I got older, that this dream probably would not happen and today I don't even really play soccer, I run track instead. :)

  5. when i was younger i used to think that i would grow up and be a person with millions of dollars becuse of a good job, but now that i am older i relized that it would take alot of smarts and colledge to even come close to that it is still posible if i do smart investing and i am a work-a-holice that saves more then spends but the chances are slim to non.

  6. When I was little I wanted to be a Professional Baseball player. I thought it would be the coolest job in the world. This was disillusioned because the odds of it happening are almost impossible.

  7. When i was a child i had a dream to play professional basketball. This dream mostly came from watching movies. I enjoyed playing basketball at school and at home. But as I got older I realized I wanted a life outside of basketball and the whole pro thing isn't very realistic. I had new dreams about life. But also continued playing basketball and loving it.

  8. When I was younger, I wanted to be a Doctor. I wanted to help people with their "Ouchies" as my mom would put it. I think this had to do a lot with the fact that my mom was going to school to be a nurse at the time. As I got older, I realized I was never going to become a doctor, because I couldn't handle a simple trail of blood from a paper cut. I couldn't accomplish this goal because I'm to scared of needles and other objects they use. I was okay with the fact that I would never be a famous doctor who saved every person's life. I knew I was meant to do something else...

  9. when i was little i dreamed of playing in the NFL. I used to dream of playing for the Packers and getting to play with Brett Favre and Donald Driver. I thought i would go to UW Madison and play for the badgers and get drafted. I used to practice and play football with my cousins all the time to get better so i could play in the NFL. My dream slowly went away when i realized how much it costed to go to UW Madison and how big you have to be and good to play in the NFL. Also you have to put so much work and effort into the weightroom and learning your specific position that it just isnt possible. It sucked knowing that it wasnt going to come true but i got over it.

  10. When I was younger, I thought for sure that I would someday play in the NBA. I would spend hours outside shooting and practicing crossovers and ball handling. I could see myself walking up to the podium and shaking NBA commish David Stern's hand as my name was called in the draft. I figured I would be this studly shooting guard who just drained three's and dunked it in between the legs and what not. Then I got to middle school and realized that I really wasn't that good. Even in high school I still wasn't that great, but I wasn't dedicated enough to get better, so I just stopped playing. Could I play next year and possibly walk-on to a D1 school...no probably not thus ending my dream

  11. When I was a young child, I had a dream that I was a famous brain surgeon. Ever since this dream, I have wanted to become a doctor. To this day, I still want to become a doctor. As I come closer to deciding my future, my dream has become delusioned. I have realized that I will have to go to school for around 10 more years after high school and I don't think I have the focus to do so. Therefore, I came up with a back up plan which leads me into the business field. Hopefully, my decision will lead me to a bright future.

  12. When I was little my dream was to be a football player/dentist. One time at the dentist office he let me use the water thing while mom got her teeth cleaned, and that made my life at that time. I later realized how gross looking at people's mouths all day was, and the dentist thing went out the window. Most little boys want to be a pro athlete of some sort. For me it was football. But,then as time goes on most of us realize we should move on to more realistic dreams.

  14. When I was a child, I use to dream about being a tour on movies/TV shows. I fell asleep imagining that I would get to visit my favorite stars. I was invited to the sets of the TV shows and the movies to meet all the actors and actress. The people that I saw was Hilary Duff, Michael McCurry, actors from Disney channel teens, and many more. After as a group we went to a restaurant and then later to a party and socialize. We all talked and everyone loved to be with each other and I then I woke up and I didn’t get to see what happened next. I was disappointed in this dream because I didn’t know what was going to happen, if I would meet them again and I haven’t had the dream since.

  15. One dream that I had when I was younger was I would play in the NFL. That didn’t work out because I hate football and find it very boring. Another dream I had was that I would be an Olympic swimmer. After like two years I realized that to become an Olympic swimmer I needed to be really good and more dedicated. At that time I couldn’t even make it to state, while people my age that would become Olympians made it to nationals. When I realized that I would have to be great, I worked harder and made it further. Now I compete at a national level and I am still getting faster.

  17. I had a dream once that I would find a million dollars in the street. I now realize that there is probably a one percent chance that this will happen, so it won't happen for me. I'm never lucky, so I don't think I will ever become rich. Becoming rich doesn't happen over night, so I don't expect to become rich. I almost always think of myself as a poor person because it takes a lot to become rich.

  18. When I was younger I believed that I was going to be a professional singer. As I grew older I realized that I have no time to work towards that goal and it seems so un-realistic.

  19. When I was young, I dreamed of making it as a professional basketball player. I dreamed that I would be dunking, and scoring a load of points each game. I dreamed that one day I could be just like Michael Jordan, the best basketball player that there ever was. I realize now that that dream is not possible for me. I now forget about those dreams so that I don’t disappoint myself. I know now that it is not realistic, and I probably won’t even get offered to play basketball in college. Now I dream of things that I am capable of, things that are coming true.

  20. When i was younger i dreamed of playing in the NFL. I thought it would be so cool playing the thing that i love the most while getting paid millions of dollars to just play a sport. But as I've grown up i have started to realize how much time and effort you have to put into it to get that far. I love playing football but, its not realistic for me to make it to the pros with the school that i'm going to and with how expensive college is. I'll just stick to playing highschool football and more than likely go on to play in college.

  22. When I was younger, I used to dream that i would become a famous hunter, and have my own hunting show. As I got older I realized that to travel all over the country takes too much money which I don't have. I was disappointed when I realized this, but there are plenty of more dreams that I can stive for.

  23. When I was younger (and still now) I dreamed about living the high life. I would always imagine myself in either New York or California living in a huge house and being a successful doctor or business owner. I would see myself saving lives, creating cures, inventing new products and be known worldwide. This dream has never been disillusioned but I have realized how much work and passion I am going to have to put forth to make my dream come true. :)

  24. When I was younger, I always dreamed of being a great archaeologist and bringing dinosaurs back to life, just like Jurassic Park. I'd always hoped to find a new skeleton and be the one to name it. When I got older, though, I fell away from prehistory and realized that technology wasn't exactly up-to-par with recreating an entire species. The dream wasn't exactly crushed, but I was a little sad that I wouldn't be able to see a raptor pack running down the street.

  25. When I was younger, I hoped that someday I could play a professional sport. I didn't even care what sport I played, as long as I could be a professional. I wanted to be famous and make a lot of money. I dreamed of living the life with other famous clelebrities and professional athletes. As I got older, I realized how hard it is to be a professional athlete. I am not skilled enough to carry out this dream. When I realized this, I was not too upset since I saw that I was interested in other professions as well.

  26. When I was a child, I dreamed about getting a fast, old car. Possibly a 1969 Chevy Camaro. However, I soon realized that there are not many of them left around. There were also not many around that were in good condition. Also I realized that the if there was a ’69 Camaro in good condition, it would be very expensive.

  27. When i was young i wanted to blow things up. I thought it was very easy to do. To my surprise i found out it was illegal and hard to do. You have to be careful not to hurt yourself or others, and not to damage the wrong things.

  28. When I was younger I kept having this dream of when Kiel was under attack and I always ended up in by or near the gazebo by the Dairy Queen. As i grew up this dream became more detailed and clear, then i realized from this dream that every one dies, we might die all together fighting for survival or one by one alone on our own terms.

  29. When I was younger I dreamed of playing in the NFL as a wide receiver and wear the number 84 like my favorite receiver at the time Randy Moss. In middle school I scored seven touchdowns in a single season, I thought for sure the NFL was in my future. But as I got older I noticed the size and athleticism of the stars in the NFL, and how I compared to them. It is a disappointment because I would still today love to compete in football for a living.

  30. One dream I had when I was a child was to become a racecar driver in the F1 series. As I grew up I understood how hard the dream was to accomplish. My dream began to fade when I heard about a boy twelve years old getting signed to Ferrari. My perspective changed because I understood, if I did not come from a rich family, I probably was not going to race in Formula One. If I did not bring big money to the manufacturer, or did not have any connections to the owner I would never have a chance to show my ability in a Formula One car. Today I still try to not give up on my dream, and when I hear about a young kid with money racing, it makes me a mad and sad that my dream will never become true. These moments make me mad, but I still remain grateful for what I have accomplished in my life so far.

  31. When I was little I always dreamed of becoming a professional figure skater. I always loved watching them during the olympics with my grandma. The pretty flowing dresses, the way they glide across the ice, I thought it was so beautiful. As I got older I realized the closest rink was 30 minutes away and the price for lessons were quite costly and at the time we couldnt afford it. I ended up playing a bunch of sports and sorta forgetting about the skating until every few years the winter olympics would come around or during winter time I would skate on the river or a pond and wish I could do the flips and turns and skate as beautiful as the woman on TV.

  32. When I was younger I was in gymnastics and dreamed of going to the Olympics and winning a medal. After being in gymnastics for five years I wasn’t able to go to gymnastics anymore because I wouldn’t have been able to be on the gymnastics team because it was held at a different school. Also I came to realize that going to the Olympics takes a lot of money. Even though I was am still am disappointed that I can’t be on the gymnastics team and my dream won’t come true. I still enjoy doing gymnastics for fun.

  33. When I was young I always dreamed of being a pilot. At the age of 13 I went up in a piper and was allowed to steer the plane myself. Now that I am older and have taken a more realistic look at life I am interested in construction. Even though I have a strong desire to work construction, I am not sure if it would pay off in the long run.

  35. AS a child i always wanted to become a famous singer. I would always sing and put on shows for my parents with my sister as a back up dancer and myself center stage. As i grew older i realized that it would take a lot of time, determination and money. Now i realize that if i truly wanted to become a singer i would have to work really hard and be totally dedicated to it. So for now i will just stick to singing in my car!
